USSSA East Teams Come Together Through Softball to Help Families Touched by Autism

Pasadena, MD – USSSA East created an inaugural "Strike out Autism" event in October 2016 to help increase awareness of autism and support families that are affected by it and to our surprise 113 teams chose to participate which is rare for a first year event. Unlike cancer where everyone understands what the affliction is and knows at least someone that's suffered from it, there's a lot of public uncertainty of what autism is, what causes it and how the levels of autism in an individual are measured.

“By holding the tournament and having literature and professionals on site at the event educating our participants we're able to help raise the social consciousness of autism and to make people aware that there are support groups and assistance available for families who may have a member living with the condition,” commented Bill Dowell, USSSA Maryland and Delaware State Director.

The primary purpose of the donation is to provide financial assistance to individuals who need therapy to learn life's everyday functions but who otherwise couldn't afford it and consequently wouldn't get it. This year USSSA East chose Budding Voices in Pasadena and the Linwood Center in Ellicott City as beneficiaries for the event and each received a $2500 donation to offer assistance to those who can't afford the therapy they require.
