USSSA East: Saving Second Base and Giving Back

Pasadena – On a bright and sunny weekend in early October, 130 teams throughout Central Maryland and the Lower Eastern Shore made it possible for USSSA East to once again be able to make a sizeable donation to support breast cancer charities in the region.

The USSSA Save Second Base Tournament is in its 6th year of raising funds by contributing a portion of team entry fees, collecting donations and selling breast cancer awareness merchandise where 100% of proceeds are contributed to the cause. Teams participating usually don their best pink uniforms and socks, many with a show of support for family or friends who, at some point, have been diagnosed.

This year’s beneficiaries include the Red Devil’s, Women Supporting Women and the Aiello Breast Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Don’t let the name fool you…the driving force behind the Red Devils, Executive Director Jan Wilson, is a soft spoken and compassionate woman dedicated to helping others. The Red Devils mission is to support patients in ways that most people do not think of, and relieve some of their stress during what is one of the most difficult times of their lives. They supply patients with vouchers for transportation or parking, help with utilities, rent and mortgage, and medical costs, as well as regular daily living like house cleaning and meal preparation. On October 30, 2017, USSSA East was proud to be able to present the Red Devils organization with a $2,500 donation check.

On November 9, 2017, USSSA East presented a check for $2,500 to Women Supporting Women, a local support organization located on the Lower Eastern Shore. This grass roots organization began providing awareness, support and education to the Delmarva Peninsula in 1993. They have grown from holding meetings in the waiting room of the Radiation Department of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, to being able to reach out to the community at locations in Pocomoke, Ocean City, Cambridge as well as their home office in Salisbury.

On November 28, 2017, USSSA East presented a check for $5,000 to the Aiello Breast Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Washington Medical Center. From their first appointment and receiving of their “bible” binder, to the opportunity to sign the “last treatment” chair, this center provides all-encompassing breast care to men and women throughout the region. Their focus is on prevention, early detection, treatment and supportive services for their patients. The Aiello Breast Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program of the American College of Surgeons.

Since its inception in 2011, the USSSA Save Second Base Tournament has generated more than $42,000 in donations for several charities that assist those with breast cancer.
